NHS Fight against Diabetes
Feel like sponsoring a team for a good cause? Want to make a difference? The Mckeel Academy NHS will be walking a 5K around Lake Hollingsworth on March 24th. The money raised from sponsors will be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, fighting against Type 1 Diabetes. You can sponsor the team as they attempt to raise $1000 for the JDRF by using the sponsor link below.
Type 1 develops when someone’s own body destroys insulin producing cells, meaning that these people need to have insulin delivered through an injection or pump. Some possible complications with this disease could be heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease, and possibly amputation, so it is crucial that there are sponsors. Anyone can develop Type 1 Diabetes, but it is most common in children and young adults. I’m sure you know at least somebody that has diabetes, so please sponsor us to help fight it.

Career Shadowing
Decision is a risk rooted in the courage of being free. ~ Paul Tillich
Mckeel does Career Shadowing every year to help you figure out what the heck you want to do with your life, besides MW3. You have to find a friend or family member whose career you are interested in and follow them around for the day while asking them questions about their job. The more pictures you take; the better. The next day, you will have to create a project of some kind presenting the information you gathered from the shadowing. As you should know by now, Career Shadowing is coming up. If you didn’t know, Kyle Cochran, high school’s career shadowing day is on March 7th while middle school is on March 6th.
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably running out of family members to shadow forcing you to shadow friends of the family. If you’re worried about professionalism, follow these lines below when calling your mentor:
“Hello, my name is _______________ from McKeel Academy and I am scheduled to Career Shadow you on (date).”
“What time should I arrive and get picked up?”
“What time do you eat lunch, and should I bring my own lunch or money to buy lunch?”
“Is camera use acceptable?”
“Are there any special safety instructions?”
“Do you require a liability release form?”
“I am really looking forward to job shadowing you on (date). Thank you for allowing me this opportunity.”
They may be cheesy, but it works.
FAQ
Does Career Shadowing count as a grade?
Yes, as a grade in your History class.
Do I have to wear my uniform?
Yes, unless you shadow somewhere that requires a uniform, like a construction worker.
What if I can’t find anywhere to go?
You will be put in a classroom and probably forced to work on worksheets. If you don’t show up, it will kill your grade even more.
Can I go to a school?
You cannot career shadow at any of the Mckeel Schools. You can shadow a non-classroom teacher at another school, like an administrator or guidance counselor. (Wish I would have known that…I shadowed a teacher at another school back in 7th grade. Good times, good times.)
Be sure to get more information from your History class teacher.

Happy Birthday, Dear Grandpa
Synopsis:
A cantankerous grandfather, ill-tempered and paranoid, is determined to think that his grandkids, three young adult siblings, are trying to kill him for their inheritance ($642 and a postcard collection). Grandpa doesn’t mind shouting it down the halls of his apartment building to alert whatever neighbors he can. So when Grandpa suddenly slumps forward, face down in the birthday cake at his surprise party, the grandkids realize it looks like murder and they’re the suspects. What follows is a fast-paced series of charades, plot twists, off-beat humor and one-liners, to make this the funniest, sunniest surprise party ever.
Performances will be Tuesday October 11th and Thursday October 13th in the McKeel auditorium at 7:00pm.
The cost for the show is: $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adults.
